Comparison of pollutant emissions from a historic and a modern vehicle during chassis dynamometer testing

This study compares the exhaust emissions of two passenger cars: a 1974 Volkswagen Type 1 and a modern 2008 Volkswagen Golf V. The analysis highlights how the development of powertrains and exhaust after-treatment systems over several decades has contributed to the reduction of pollutant emissions. The evaluation considered exhaust components such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon dioxide (CO₂). The tests were conducted using a chassis dynamometer and a portable exhaust gas analyzer, the Axion RS+. For the purposes of the study, an acceleration scheme was designed to replicate segments of type-approval emission tests. The conclusions summarize the findings and provide guidelines for improving the design of older vehicles to reduce their negative environmental impact.
