Life Cycle Eco-Efficiency Assessment of Selected Gasoline-Powered BEV and ICEV Vehicle Segments
Gasoline-powered vehicles are the best-selling type of passenger car in Europe (33% of all registrations in 2024). In the previous year, sales of environmentally friendly battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the European Union fell by 6% compared to 2023. The main objective of the study was to assess the ecological efficiency of the life cycle of selected segments of BEVs and ICEVs powered by gasoline. Analyses were carried out for the life cycles of vehicles from segments A and B, C and SUVs equipped with two different powertrains BEVs and ICEVs powered by gasoline. Two time frames were taken into account during the research. The first one included cars registered in 2020, while the second one - a forecast for vehicles that are to appear on the market in 2050 and meet the main assumptions of the Paris Agreement. Two different post-consumer management methods of the research objects were also adopted - landfill or recycling (to the greatest extent possible). The assessment of the ecological efficiency of the life cycles of the considered vehicles was carried out based on the Life Cycle Assessment method (ReCiPe 2016 model and IPCC 2021).
