Investigation of the mechanism of the Soot in Oil contamination. Overtaking the limits of the combustion models

Current internal combustion engine’s emissions control strategies (i.e. Exhaust Gas Recirculation, EGR) lead to an increase on of Particulate Matter quantity generated during the combustion process. Such particulates may contaminate the engine oil, reducing its tribological properties thus accelerating the engine wear and reducing its life. The present study analyzes the mechanism for which the particulates generated on the combustion chamber transfers to the engine’s oil. As first step, several engine operating points are measured to correlate the generated particulates and the quantity reaching the oil (real time measurement). A Computational Fluid Dynamic model is then calibrated to characterize the particulates distribution over the combustion chamber. Finally, the mechanism which transfers the particulates from the combustion chamber to the oil is proposed. As a result, a good correlation between experimental database and the numerical models has been found then the proposed mechanism of particulates transfer to the engine oil is validated. Comprehension of the mechanism for the oil contamination by soot allows optimizing the emissions strategies in order to enhance engine life.
