The influence of particulate contamination in diesel fuel on the damage to fuel injection systems

The paper discusses threats created to modern high pressure common rail systems (HPCR) by various type and size particulate contamination contained in the diesel fuel. A breakdown is provided and main sources of particulate matter origin are provided, which can be contaminants in commercial diesel fuels. Standards used to determine particulate contamination content in fuels are shortly described, including both in terms of weight and of contaminants size distribution, in accordance with the requirements of the Worldwide Fuel Char-ter and of the PN-EN590 standard. In HCPR subassemblies the areas are indicated, which are most exposed to damage caused by the existence of particulate contamination in fuels. The impact of various size particulate contamination on the process of accelerated wear followed by damage to the fuel injection system has been studied in long-term tests on an engine test stand. Also processes of tribological wear of working components of fuel injectors and of high pressure pumps material has been characterised. Measurement results of par-ticulate contamination in diesel fuels available on the Polish market have been presented, referred to requirements of the PN-EN590 stand-ard and of the Worldwide Fuel Charter. In the summary attention has been drawn to the growing problem of particulate contamination in fuels available on the market, and in particular their threat to durability and proper operation of increasingly complex and precisely manu-factured HPCR type fuel injection systems.
