Gasification of plastic waste in a steam atmosphere as a potential source of gaseous fuels for the combustion engine

The current policy of the European Union imposes an obligation to reduce the carbon footprint in the automotive industry. Currently used methods of waste collection and processing generate significant streams of plastics that are not suitable for material recycling. One of the methods of using this type of fraction is its processing into RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel), which is mainly used in combustion and co-combustion processes. An alternative method of thermal processing is gasification in a steam atmosphere, which consists in the transformation of waste materials into synthesis gas, which is a carrier of chemical energy contained in the processed waste. This article discusses the thermochemical idea of gasification of waste in a steam atmosphere, presents the results of research conducted on several types of waste plastics, and analyzes the possibility of using the gas generated in the discussed process as a fuel for powering combustion engines.
