Application of 3D-Printed Metal Pistons in Internal Combustion Engines: Advantages and Challenges
The advancement of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies has opened new possibilities for designing and producing internal combustion engine (ICE) components. Among these, 3D-printed metal pistons present a promising innovation, offering unprecedented design flexibility, material efficiency, and the potential for improved thermal and mechanical properties. This preliminary study explores the advantages and limitations of 3D-printed metal pistons in ICE applications. The key benefits include weight reduction through topology optimization, enhanced heat dissipation due to complex internal structures, and the ability to manufacture customized geometries for improved combustion efficiency. However, challenges such as material porosity, anisotropic mechanical properties, and long-term durability must be addressed under high thermal and mechanical stresses. Additionally, the impact of additive manufacturing processes on fatigue resistance, surface finish, and cost-effectiveness is critically examined. This article provides a foundation for further research into the feasibility and optimization of 3D-printed metal pistons for next-generation internal combustion engines.
