Monitoring the Quality of Liquid Fuels in Relation to the Efficiency and Safety of Internal Combustion Engine Fuel Systems

The laboratory in Bydgoszcz, operating under the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK), conducts comprehensive quality assessments of liquid fuels—primarily diesel and gasoline—in accordance with current legal standards. A central focus of the research is the evaluation of physicochemical properties that directly impact the performance, durability, and operational safety of internal combustion engines. The laboratory determines key fuel quality indicators, including the octane number of gasoline and the cetane number of diesel fuels, using Waukesha CFR-F1/F2 and CFR-F5 test engines. Additionally, critical parameters such as vapor pressure, flash point, and viscosity are analyzed, alongside low-temperature operability metrics like cloud point and cold filter plugging point. Oxidation stability and water content are also assessed, reflecting the importance of proper storage and distribution of petroleum products. The laboratory's activities are instrumental in removing non-compliant fuels from the market, thereby enhancing engine reliability and user safety. Through ongoing testing and collaboration with regulatory authorities, the laboratory contributes significantly to the standardization and improvement of fuel quality across Poland
