IC engine with Szymkowiak cycle and variable compression ratio
The article presents the concept of an internal combustion engine operating in the Szymkowiak cycle with the possibility of changing the compression ratio. The Szymkowiak cycle enables the engine to work under overexpanded stroke. The design of the crank-piston mechanism and its kinematic analysis focused on piston motion as well as the forces and torques acting in selected pins and connecting rods are presented. The article also discusses a solution that allows the compression ratio to be smoothly changed in the range from 10 to 14 during engine operation. The results of the kinematic analysis provide promises for the improvement of thermal efficiency as well as overall efficiency of the engine resulting from extended expansion stroke and reduced frictional forces.
