In light of the regulations on light vehicle certification, starting September 2019 it will be necessary to conduct exhaust emission testing using both chassis dynamometer and under real traffic conditions. That is a legislative requirement, present in EU regulations for the purpose of RDE (Real Driving Emissions) procedure. Setting the route of the RDE vehicle for the purpose of light vehicle exhaust emission testing is related to fulfillment of numerous requirements, such as those relating to ambient temperature and the topographic height of the test, driving style (dynamic specifications of the drive), duration of the drive, length of individual test components (city, rural, highway) etc. Domestically, the work on setting down RDE routes continues constantly at various research centers. Setting such route for tests involving authors of this article was the main challenge to facilitate future certification testing related to the assessment of the emission of noxious substances in the exhausts emitted by light vehicles, but also in the development work relating to, for example, the determination of energy consumption of electrical and hybrid vehicles. The route was selected so that the test could continue uninterruptedly. Data was registered on a continuous basis until the minimum testing time was reached. Light vehicles and a PEMS device were used for the tests to measure vehicle emissions, vehicle speed, the route covered etc. Installation of the device was done so that it would have the least possible impact on the emission of vehicle exhaust emissions from the vehicle used for testing and its operation. The vehicle load was compatible with the standard requirements and consisted of the above measuring equipment, the driver and the person operating such equipment. Tests were held on workdays. The roads and routes on which such drives were made were paved. The measurements were conducted in compliance with RDE package requirements (Package 1-4), i.e. taking into consideration factors such as cold engine start. The article presents vehicle route setting process that meets the detailed requirements for RDE tests. It presents selected results of vehicle exhaust emissions by a passenger car with an ignition engine on a selected RDE route. Tests presented in the article are preliminary within the extent of RDE testing discussed and serve as an introduction for further tests of vehicle exhaust emissions and energy consumption by conventional vehicles and those with alternative drive, e.g. hybrid, as well as electric vehicles in a real driving conditions.
